The Brassie is Walnut Creek Country Club's premier invitational golf tournament — a four-day experience bringing together 180 players across 90 two-man teams for six rounds of competition, world-class entertainment, and a tradition unlike anything else on the club calendar.

Whether you're a returning champion who knows every break on the South greens, or attending for the very first time, The Brassie delivers an exceptional experience from the first tee shot Wednesday to the awards ceremony Saturday night.

Tournament Format

How the Tournament Works

The Brassie features six rounds of competition across three days, with each round using a different format — rewarding every facet of the game. Flights are determined by handicap, ensuring competitive balance throughout.

Thursday — Scramble

Both players tee off; select the best drive and play from that spot. No gimmies — putt everything out. Ball placement within one club length, same conditions.

Best Ball

Each player plays their own ball throughout the hole. The lower net score counts for the team.

Friday Morning — Shamble

Both players tee off and select the best drive. Each player then plays their own ball from that spot through the hole. The lower net score counts for the team.

Friday Midday — Best Ball

Each player plays their own ball throughout the hole. The lower net score counts for the team.

Friday Afternoon — Modified Alternate Shot

Both players tee off, then select the best drive. From there, partners alternate shots until the ball is holed.

R6+

Saturday — Finals & The Horse Race

"Back in the Game" — both balls count. Flight groupings based on standings. Wild Card playoff (9-West, true alternate shot) at 2:00 PM. The Horse Race — 15 flight winners plus wild card — begins at 3:00 PM.

Walnut Creek Country Club offers a classic multi-course layout — players compete across the North, South, and West courses throughout the tournament, with flight assignments rotating by round. Course conditions are impeccably maintained by Superintendent Taylor Gray and the grounds crew.

Frequently Asked Questions

How are flights and pairings determined?

The field is divided into 15 flights of 6 teams each, grouped by handicap index to ensure competitive balance. Pairings within each flight are set by the Golf Operations team prior to the tournament. Flight assignments and tee times are distributed to all players in advance of Day 1.

What is the format — is it individual or team play?

The Brassie is a two-man team event. Partners compete together across six rounds using rotating formats: Scramble (R1), Best Ball (R2), Shamble (R3), Best Ball (R4), Modified Alternate Shot (R5), and Back in the Game — both balls count (R6). You'll want to register with your partner.

What is The Horse Race?

The Horse Race is Saturday's championship finale. The 15 flight winners plus the Wild Card winner compete in a one-hole alternate shot elimination format until a champion is crowned. It's the most electric moment of the tournament.

What is included in the VIP package?

What happens if weather delays play?

If a round is completed before a delay, it counts. If play is stopped mid-round, the entire field must have completed at least 3 holes for it to count — otherwise play resumes after the delay. If weather forces rounds to be eliminated, they are removed in this order: first the Scramble, then a Best Ball round, then the Alternate Shot round. Regardless of weather, a champion will be crowned.
